Otukpo, Benue State — May 2025
The city of Otukpo, fondly known as Texas City, on Saturday 23rd May 2025, was drenched in sorrow and solemnity as family, friends, dignitaries, and well-wishers gathered to bid farewell to one of Idoma Land’s most revered sons—Late Chief Akatu Onche, who was brutally murdered in his residence at Asa on the 1st of April, 2025.
The tragic death of Chief Akatu, a former Comptroller of Immigration, sent shockwaves across Benue State and the entire nation. Known for his unwavering commitment to integrity, transparency, and humility, Chief Akatu was not just a public servant, but a beacon of moral leadership, an icon of peace, and a father figure to many.
A Legacy of Honour and Service
Chief Akatu Onche served Nigeria with distinction and left an indelible mark in the Nigerian Immigration Service. Throughout his illustrious career, he was decorated with numerous awards for excellence, integrity, and transparency. His service was characterized by fairness, accountability, and a deep sense of national duty.
Even in retirement, his commitment to community development remained unshaken. Until his death, he served as the Chairman of the Idoma Sports Legends, an association dedicated to celebrating and promoting Idoma talents and heritage through sports. His leadership in the organization was marked by vision, unity, and passion for the youth.
A Touching Farewell Through Football
In his honour, a symbolic memorial football match was held in Otukpo, organized by his colleagues and fellow members of the Idoma Sports Legends. The atmosphere was emotional as players, clad in black armbands, observed a moment of silence before kickoff. The match was not just a game—it was a tribute to a man who believed deeply in the power of sports to transform lives and build communities.
The event drew a large crowd, including prominent personalities, former sportsmen, and members of the Idoma community both at home and in the diaspora. The turnout was a testament to the far-reaching impact of Chief Akatu’s life and work.
A Gathering of Dignitaries and Loved Ones
The burial ceremony witnessed the presence of high-ranking government officials, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and dignitaries from across the country.
