Chief Akatu Onche – OKAPOR 1

Welcome to the Idoma Sports Legends Membership Corner!

Chief Akatu Onche – OKAPOR 1 was born on November 29, 1958, in the vibrant town of Otukpo, a place that has always held a special place in my heart. My early education journey began at St. Francis Primary School in Otukpo, where I laid the foundation for a lifelong passion for learning and excellence. I continued my secondary education at Emmanuel Secondary School in Ugboklo, where I developed a keen interest in education and leadership.

My quest for knowledge took me to St. Augustine in Lafia for my Teachers’ Certificate (TC), and subsequently, I earned my Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) from Advanced Teachers College (ATC) in Katsina-Ala. I later pursued a degree in Educational Administration and Planning for Unijos, a field that allowed me to blend my passion for education with organizational skills.

My professional career began in the educational sector, where I taught at primary schools and at Teachers College (Jesus College) in Otukpo. Teaching was not just a job for me; it was a calling that I embraced with dedication and enthusiasm. It was during these formative years that I realized the impact of education on young minds and the importance of nurturing future generations.

In a significant career shift, I joined the Nigerian Immigration Service, a move that broadened my horizons and took me on a remarkable journey across 13 states of Nigeria. My tenure with the Immigration Service culminated in an international posting to Switzerland, where I served with distinction until my retirement. This global exposure enriched my understanding of diverse cultures and international relations.

Sports have always been an integral part of my life. As a passionate athlete, I dabbled in various sports but eventually gravitated towards football. My love for the game saw me play up to the club level and later transition into officiating as a National Grade One Referee. Over the years, I participated in numerous NFA-organized matches, ultimately retiring as a premier league referee. This role took me to almost all the states of the federation, allowing me to witness the unifying power of football firsthand.

Today, I am honored to serve as the Chairman of Idoma Football Legends, a role that allows me to give back to the sport that has given me so much joy and fulfillment. My journey from a small town in Otukpo to the international arena has been marked by dedication, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to excellence in all my endeavors.
